Senior Electrical Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of electrical systems for autonomous aquatic vehicles. This role focuses on circuit card design, RF engineering for antennas and radios, and complex sensor integration. The ideal candidate is hands-on, highly analytical, and experienced in diagnosing challenging hardware issues across mixed-signal and embedded systems.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Design & Development

  •  Design and develop PCBAs for control, sensing, power management, and communication subsystems.
  • Own schematic design, component selection, board bring-up, and design reviews.
  • Develop robust analog and digital circuitry with attention to noise, grounding, and environmental resilience
  • Collaborate with mechanical and manufacturing teams to ensure reliable integration into pressure vessels, enclosures, and AUV structures.

 Antennas & RF Systems (Non-underwater)

  • Design and troubleshoot RF interfaces related to GPS receivers, radios, antennas, and topside communication links.
  • Perform RF measurements (return loss, S11, VSWR, gain, cable testing) and iterate on design/layout for optimal performance.

Sensor Integration & Embedded Development

  • Integrate sensors such as pressure transducers, temperature sensors, IMUs, magnetometers, GPS modules, analog sensors, and digital peripherals.
  • Write embedded drivers for sensors, microcontrollers, and digital interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, etc.).
  • Collaborate with software and autonomy teams to ensure high-quality sensor data acquisition, timing, filtering, and calibration.

EMI/EMC, Noise, and System Debugging

  • Investigate and resolve EMI/EMF issues across PCBAs, wiring harnesses, power systems, and sensor interfaces.
  • Address noise, grounding, shielding, and coupling challenges common to mixed-signal AUV systems.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and system-level debugging in both lab and field environments.

System Integration & Verification

  • Drive electrical system bring-up, validation, and troubleshooting across full AUV platforms.
  • Develop and execute test plans for electronics, sensors, and communication systems.
  • Support platform testing in bench, tank, and open-water scenarios.

Documentation & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Produce schematics, PCB documentation, integration notes, test reports, and electrical design artifacts.
  • Work closely with mechanical, software, manufacturing, and mission operations teams to ensure system reliability and readiness.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Postgraduate or undergraduate degree in engineering, or related field with experience in blue tech, preferably in uncrewed underwater vehicles, drones, robotics, or similar hardware products.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Recognized leadership skills that inspire teams and individuals to do their best work.
  • Familiarity with robotics concepts such as autonomy, navigation, networking, and sensor integration
  • Being an effective communicator at all levels within Jaia and our customer, partner, vendor, and collaborator organizations will be an essential skill.
  • Proven track record in driving operational efficiency, scalability, and innovation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with battery management systems (BMS), power electronics, or charge/discharge monitoring.
  • Experience with motors, actuators, thrusters, and motor controllers/speed controllers used in robotic systems.
  • Background in AUVs, ROVs, marine systems, or other harsh-environment robotics.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux, RTOS environments, or microcontroller families (STM32, TI, Microchip, etc.).
  • Knowledge of environmental testing (pressure, thermal, vibration).
  • Ability to define electrical architecture and lead major design efforts.
